I’m passionate about counselling, and about holistic health and wellness, particularly as it relates to mental health - here's my backstory! I'm a born-and-raised Islander, but spent several years working and studying elsewhere in Canada. I've always had an interest in human behaviour, and in trying to understand myself and others, so was drawn to the helping professions from a young age. I taught gymnastics, managed an inner-city after school centre, and also worked in youth mental health. After completing my BSc in Health Education, I began working at AIDS PEI, providing education, support and training sessions across PEI. Eventually I decided to puruse counselling and earned a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from UNB, and began working as a Career Counsellor. My private practice began part-time in 2008, and in 2015 I was able to expand into full-time. I regularly pursue professional development, particularly in the area of trauma. To align with my holisitc philosophy, I completed Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR™) training in 2015, and yoga teacher training in 2017; incorporating mindfulness into yoga, and yoga into my counselling practice was a natural progression. In 2019, I completed a certification in Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy (TIYT™), which promotes self-regulation and symptom management for multiple mental health issues including anxiety, trauma, and depression. Combining the philosophy of yoga, meditation and health education within my practice gives me a unique approach to counselling therapy and has made my career a dream come true!
